Positive Parent Conferences

Teachers,
Here is your weekly dose of “5-Point Friday.

Positive Parent Conferences—
What should a good parent conference look like at the beginning of the year? Just like the students, we need to build a relationship with the parents so if we call to get support from them they will be more apt to give it to us. Keep notes. Share an experience for the first week or two. Here are a few questions you might ask.
  1. What do you see as your child's greatest strengths or skills? Tell me about a time when you saw your child demonstrating these skills.
  2. What do you hope your child says about his/her experience in school this year?
  3. What are your fears or concerns about your child in this year of school?
  4. How and when would you like me to be in contact with you this year? What do you hope I'd communicate with you about?
  5. Is there anything else you can tell me about your child that you think would help me support his/her learning?
  6. Is there a question you hope I'll ask you about your child?
Let the parents know that you care and together you will both help their child succeed in school. Let the parents know you are a partner with them this year. If you want to talk with them about data, keep it to a minimum and have a plan of something they can help support at home what you are doing at school. Most parents know how their child is and if they need help. They are always comfortable enough to admit it or show it. Teachers are usually the bearer of bad news for parents. Keep this first conference positive. In fact, keep all your meetings with parents as positive as possible.

This is an interesting idea. Give students a topic and have them talk about it. What a great way to get them talking about content in English and especially in Spanish where they need the practice talking with each other.

A Big Thank You —
Thank you, teachers, for all your patience as we get 2nd and 3rd schedules taken care of. This has been a new idea for all of us and we appreciate everyone being flexible as we get the best possible plan for the students and teachers. We really appreciate all the hard work 2nd and 3rd grade teachers have put in to get this idea off the ground. They have each worked many hours getting this put together. The logistics of having the right students in the right places at the right times, as well as getting the teachers time to work together has been interesting. Thank you to the 2nd and 3rd grade teachers for all your hard work. Thank you to everyone else for being flexible. Thank you for all you do. Thank you.

I appreciate all of you and your hard work.

Reflecting on the First Half

Teachers,

Here is your weekly dose of “5-Point Friday.

Reflecting on the First Half —
I’ve been watching a little football and I always wonder what the coaches say in the locker room at half time. It is half-time for us. Here are a few reflection questions to think about as we move into the next half of the year.
  • In what area(s) do I wish I could better reach my students?
  • Do I need to recalibrate my perspective on outside forces that I can’t directly control?
  • Do I give my students the opportunity for frequent and authentic reflection?
  • Is learning confined within the walls of our classroom?
  • Am I doing all the “heavy lifting?”

What I’m Watching —
This video is only up until December 31. There is also a way to win a Chromebook at the end of watching this hour PD session about Chromebooks. I learned that by Clicking CTRL+Shift+T will bring back a closed tab…so when students try to click off a tab they don’t want me to see, I can click that keystrokes and see what the last tab they closed was. I don’t use this often, but there are a few that I have talked with that I will check on.

    • Look for ways to help others
    • Do an act of kindness every day
    • Give everyone the benefit of the doubt
    • Be positive
    • Share what you know with others
  • Music shows unity by all instruments working together to form one piece of music.
  • Dancing is a motivator and when all else fails we need to dance.
  • Be happy in our school, in our community, in our state, in the United States.
  • No student left behind.

Building Suns

Teachers,
Here is your weekly dose of “5-Point Friday.

Building Suns —
I was at Death Valley NP during Spring Break and it was hot! 101˚ to be exact. On weekend nights the rangers do talks about the park and on Friday they did a Star Walk. It was amazing. I saw amazing constellations and bright stars. One of the rangers started talking about the Orion Nebula. To find the Orion Nebula you find Orion’s belt, three starts in a row in the Western Sky, and right below the belt is a haze and that is the Orion Nebula. He told us that a nebula is where stars are made. Nebulae are made out of interstellar gas and dust and as it comes together it compacts and bang, a star is made. So when I heard this I started thinking about what teachers do. You take all this knowledge, information, behavior modification, life skills, and fun and  start to build people our of our little ones. As they gather all this learning for you, Bang, they turn into little stars. And since our sun is a star, you are creating Dixie Suns. We are the Dixie Sun Nebula taking knowledge and creating little stars. As we get close to SAGE testing, we will see how well our stars are doing. How much knowledge they are retaining. We do need to remember that tests do not make stars, the learning does. Keep providing strong Tier 1 teaching and they will become the suns we know they can become.

What I’m watching —
This yo-yo champion talks about finding his life’s passion. His story in the beginning is worth listening to, but the yo-yo work he does is pretty amazing also. one to show your class about how to take your passion and make it a job.

Starting out each day with a little mindfulness activity could make a difference in the school day. This article is written by a secondary school teacher, but is there a way to make it happen in an elementary school class?

A Big Thank You —
Thank you Karla. You have really stepped up into the leadership position in Fifth Grade. You really make sure things get done. An the coaching you are doing for Derrell has been very helpful to him. He mentions it all the time. He also mentions how much Teryn has helped him get right into the lessons and make his class work. Thank you Karla. Thank you for all you do.

I appreciate all of you and your hard work. Enjoy another wonderful weekend.
